Chronic Ear Infections in Infants

I took my son to the doctor for his 6 month check up and during the exam the doctor informed me that he had a double ear infection. How could I not know this? Talk about feeling like a bad mom. Not to mention this is his fourth ear infection! So far he has been on antibiotics 20% of his life. I am becoming more and more concerned especially that I was not even aware he had one. I'm now wondering if he has had even more that I was never aware of? Or what if the last one never really went away? Or what I could be doing to contribute to this?

I've heard that chronic ear infections can show less severe symptoms so the infection may go unnoticed and untreated for a longer period of time causing more damage than an acute infection. This makes me want to take him to the doctor weekly just to make sure.

He hasn't appeared to be sick, he's never around anyone that smokes, and he's been breastfed exclusively, although we just recently started some solids. The doctor said he is at more risk because his big brother goes to preschool and brings home all kinds of viruses, and they can be transmitted to him with or without any obvious symptoms.

He is now on another 10 day dose of amoxicillin and the doctor will see him again in about a week. Meanwhile I am trying to do my own research on middle ear infections and learn as much as possible. I would really like to find out why he keeps getting them and if there are any other forms of treatment besides constantly prescribing him antibiotics, because I am also fearful that he may become immune.

Has anyone experienced chronic ear infections with their little ones?

A Baby Asked God

I thought this would be a great post to pass along with Mother's Day right around the corner. I really enjoyed reading it and hope you all will too. I found it at Write&Picture This... her blog is great! So if you haven't visited her yet go check it out!

Newborns Conversation With God

A baby asked God:

They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?

God said,

'Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you.'
The child further inquired, 'But tell me, here in heaven I don't have to do anything but sing and smile to be happy.'

God said,

'Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. And you will feel your angel's love and be very happy.'
Again the child asked, 'And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language?'

God said,

'Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.'
'And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?'

God said,

'Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.
'Who will protect me?'

God said, 'Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life.'
'But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.'
God said,

'Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you.'

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth could be heard and the child hurriedly asked,

'God, if I am to leave now, please tell me my angel's name.'

God said,

'You will simply call her, 'Mom.'

The Cloth Diaper Experiment

After experimenting the last few weeks I can happily say we have made the switch to cloth diapers. I have always wanted to but felt it would be too difficult. I didn't realize the huge variety of cloth diapering systems available.

It didn't take much research to know that the AIO (all in one) diapers would be the best option for us. They advertise as being "dad friendly" and that was very important to me because I knew if not I may be changing diapers by myself for the next 2 years. Not to mention we needed something quick and easy for our super squirmy boy.

I searched online for weeks just to see all my options. I decided to go with the Kushies Ultra Diapers, which I actually found to be cheaper at my local health foods store than online. Kushies also offers super cute diaper bags, you have to check them out!

Anyways, I was really afraid of constant leaks and messes, but have only had one incident during a long nap. I also thought they would look silly like he had a giant butt or something but you can't even tell he's wearing them. They have such cute designs to choose from and they are all very gender neutral so I think it would be an extra good investment for those planning to have more children.

I won't lie, the poopy diapers are not so fun. But now that my son is 6 months and starting to eat solids he is down to pooping once a day or even every other day so it's not so bad. Over all I am shocked at how easy they have been to use and to wash. I would really recommend AIO's to anyone wanting to switch to cloth diapers but afraid of losing the convenience of disposable.

Here he is!

Garlic Chicken

This recipe is delicious! Just don't let the fish sauce gross you out. I would have never tried it if I would have known it was made with fish sauce, but I'm glad I did. Even our 4 year old loves it!

All you need is:

A few cloves of garlic
A bundle of cilantro
One half onion
1 Roma tomato
2-3 chicken breasts (can substitute with any meat/tofu/seafood whatever you like)
2 Tbs of fish sauce
1 tsp of black pepper
Pinch of red pepper
Pour over noodles, or rice

Chop the onion, garlic, cilantro and tomato and set aside. Then cut chicken into bite size pieces. Put the chicken, onion, garlic, cilantro, black and red pepper in medium size mixing bowl. Pour fish sauce/oil over the mixture and coat evenly. Sate in lightly oiled fry pan until chicken is cooked about 5 minutes, adding the tomato in for the last minute or so. Then serve over your favorite pasta or rice.

Meme Monday

I wasn't tagged by anyone but after reading Pam's post at RandomThoughts
I thought it would be fun to participate in the book meme. In case you haven't heard of it before, like me, heres the rules:

Pick up the nearest book.
Turn to page 123.
Post the fifth sentence.
Tag 5 other people.

So I grabbed "The Gift Of Fear" by Gavin De Becker. Yea don't ask. Just one of those books Oprah told me that I HAD to read, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Anyways here's the fifth sentence on page 123.

"The threat means that at least for now(and usually forever), he favors words that alarm over actions that harm."

Let me know if anyone has read the book, I'm curious to know if it's worth reading.
I'm not going to tag anyone either but feel free to join in on the fun!

P.S. Make sure to stop by tomorrow because I have an awesome recipe to share!
