A Healthy Snack Kids Will Actually Eat
I tried out a recipe last night for homemade granola bars. We try to buy pretty healthy snacks but this is by far more healthy than store bought and you can play around with it and create a recipe your family will love.
2 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
1/2 cup of almonds
1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
1/2 cup wheat germ
1 cup dried cherries
4 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup of honey
Bake all dry ingredients in the oven for 20 minutes at 300°F on flat baking sheet. Stir occasionally. Heat the butter, honey, and brown sugar in a sauce pan on med-low heat while the dry ingredients are baking. Don’t add the vanilla until you remove the sauce from the heat.
After you remove the dry ingredients from the oven, place them into a bowl and mix in the cherries. Now pour the sauce into the bowl over the granola until it is coated evenly.
Next, press the granola into a greased 9″x9″ pan and bake it at 300°F for another 20 minutes. Lastly allow the granola to cool a little before cutting into squares. Then use a spatula to remove squares once completely cooled, and rap in plastic wrap to keep fresh.
